Deirdre Mackay

Deirdre Mackay's early interest in painting was fostered by her involvement with the family fine art business, Bourlets of London. This was furthered by five years study at Hornsey College of Art and followed by a career as a painter encompassing a variety of freelance work and P/T. art college teaching.
Her paintings are inspired by the two environments in which she works most, the Marches and St Ives. The subject matter of her works is a reflection of a life long interest in prehistory and artefacts. Deirdre concentrates upon the relationship between seemingly ordinary objects and creates a tension and atmosphere between them. Another theme evident in her work is the combination of the interior and exterior and the treatment of landscape itself as an exterior still life.
She says of her current work, “It is increasingly influenced by a concentration on using the medium of oil paint … and a growing passion for colour, light and form in both landscape and interiors.”
Deirdre has exhibited widely including the Royal Academy (Watercolour and Drawing Prize), the Royal Watercolour Society, the R.I and the Museum of Modern Art, Wales, at which she was also a prize winner.
